Enrica Picco

Lawyer and researcher on conflict, justice and peacebuilding

About me

With fifteen years of field experience, I have combined managerial positions with research and lectures. I’m currently working with a broad range of institutions, including the United Nations, international NGOs and think tanks.

My research focuses on the political, socio-economic and humanitarian impacts of the ongoing crises in central African region, with the intention of inspiring reflections on conflict prevention, peace-keeping and state-building. My thematic areas of interest are related to conflict dynamics, population displacement and justice issues.

I contributed to the book Making Sense of the Central African Republic (edited by Tatiana Carayannis and Louisa Lombard, Zed Books 2015) with a chapter on aid delivery trends and challenges faced within the country. I am also the author of several articles for academic reviews, journals and blogs.

I am an international lawyer, with a post-graduate education in Peace and Democracy Building and Peacekeeping Management. I’m curious, enthusiastic, committed, and passionate about my work.

Injustice anywhere
is a threat to justice

From Being Forgotten to Being Ignored: International Humanitarian Interventions in the Central African Republic

Making Sense of the Central African Republic

Lying at the centre of a tumultuous region, the Central African Republic and its turbulent history have often been overlooked. Democracy, in any kind of a meaningful sense, has eluded the country. Since the mid-1990s, army mutinies and serial rebellion in CAR have resulted in two major successful coups. Over the course of these upheavals, the country has become a laboratory for peacebuilding initiatives, hosting a two-decade-long succession of UN and regional peacekeeping, peacebuilding and special political missions. Drawing together the foremost experts on the Central African Republic, this much-needed volume provides the first in-depth analysis of the country’s recent history of rebellion, instability, and international and regional intervention.
